Alvin began his martial arts journey at an early age, initially training in Tae Kwon Do and Karate. In 1995, he discovered Pencak Silat and quickly recognised its depth, versatility, and potential for personal expression. From that point onward, Silat became a central part of his martial arts journey.
In 2003, Alvin became one of the main instructors at EastWest Studios in London’s Hendon Central, helping to run a full-time martial arts, dance, and fitness academy. His work there led to opportunities to teach and conduct seminars across the UK, as well as internationally throughout Europe and the USA.
By 2006, Alvin had completed his formal Pencak Silat training with his teacher and began developing his own journey and expression within the art.
For Alvin, Pencak Silat is a continuous journey in which an individual’s own movement, understanding, and expression naturally develop over time. Drawing from this philosophy, he was given permission to follow his own path and developed an expression of Silat known as Silat Buka Lingkaran, meaning “Silat Open Circle.” The name reflects the fluidity, velocity, connection, and adaptability of the movements, encompassing different ranges and angles.
Today, Alvin continues to teach, develop, and promote Pencak Silat, certifying instructors at their designated stages within the art and helping to expand awareness and understanding of Silat both nationally and internationally.
