My name is Tobias. I am a political scientist and American Studies scholar by training. I work as an author, educator, and moderator in Germany, Europe, and the United States.
I hold a Ph.D. from Heidelberg University, Germany, and I have taught at Heidelberg for many years. I have also been a Research and Teaching Fellow at Yale University (USA) and the transatlantic relations coordinator for the European University for Well-Being and its cooperation with Teachers College at Columbia University. So far, I have written and edited seven books on debate, democracy and current challenges for Western societies.
I deeply care about democracy, and I want to protect it. It is the basis for any free and open society where you can speak your mind, follow your dreams, and build your business.
For most of my professional life, I have thought about democracy, both in a national and international context: What keeps our society together, what pulls it apart? What are the biggest threats here? And what can we do about this – in very practical terms?
I believe in the importance of “translating” expert knowledge for everyone – this way, we can all learn from each other, and with each other. This is why I also work as a consultant and podcast host, and I get invited onto radio and TV formats as an expert on democracy and international affairs.
I love teaching - also because most of the time, I am the one who learns the most! :-)
