About me
Maynard Andan is the Head Instructor of Kali Pamantukan and a lifelong practitioner of Filipino Martial Arts with more than three decades of teaching experience. He trained in boxing at the age of 7 and began training in Arnis at age 14 in 1986 under Grandmaster Epifanio “Yuli” Romo, inheriting the Ilustrisimo Method of Grandmaster Antonio “Tatang” Ilustrisimo.
In addition to his training under Grandmaster Yuli Romo, Maynard trained directly with Grandmaster Antonio “Tatang” Ilustrisimo on several occasions and was also guided by Master Tony Diego, giving him a well-rounded understanding of the Ilustrisimo Method from three of its foremost exponents.
He began teaching Kali at the age of eighteen and has devoted his life to preserving, practicing, and sharing Filipino Martial Arts through Kali Pamantukan. His teaching emphasizes timing, adaptability, practical application, and the principles behind movement rather than the memorization of techniques.
Maynard was a member of the Philippine National Arnis Team that represented the Philippines in the 1991 Southeast Asian Games, following an accomplished record in several national Arnis competition.
Before joining the police service, he applied his martial arts in several occassions as a community peacekeeper. He later served as a police officer, where he continued to apply Filipino Martial Arts in real-world law enforcement and taught Arnis and defensive principles to fellow officers.
His background combines a traditional Ilustrisimo lineage, national-level sports competition, real-life application, and professional law enforcement experience—credentials rarely found together in a single instructor. Through decades of continuous training, competition, teaching, and practical experience, Maynard Andan continues to preserve and promote the Ilustrisimo Method and the principles of Kali Pamantukan to students in the Philippines and around the world.
