About me
Samuel Baiyewu, also known as Sambay, is a Nigerian-American professional talking drummer with over two decades of experience performing, teaching, and preserving the art of the talking drum.
Sambay began playing the talking drum professionally at the age of 9, and what started as a deep childhood connection to rhythm quickly grew into a lifelong calling. Over the years, he has developed a clear, structured, and practical approach to the talking drum that blends tradition, technique, creativity, and real-world performance experience.
His journey with the talking drum has taken him across stages, cultures, and countries, allowing him to perform for and connect with people from all walks of life. Through his playing, Sambay has inspired children, youth, and adults alike—often sparking interest in parents who want their children to learn the talking drum simply from witnessing the joy, expression, and power of his performances.
What sets Sambay apart as an instructor is his ability to break down complex rhythms and concepts into simple, understandable systems, making the talking drum accessible to beginners while still offering depth and value to experienced musicians. His teaching focuses not only on how to play, but on why rhythms work, how to apply them wisely, and when to use them in real musical settings.
Sambay is deeply committed to impact, influence, and cultural preservation. His mission is to take the talking drum to a global audience, drawing people of all backgrounds toward an appreciation and understanding of its language, versatility, and greatness. Through teaching, performance, and mentorship, he continues to inspire the next generation of talking drummers while honoring the tradition that shaped him.
In Sambay Tokasi, Samuel brings his years of experience, wisdom, and passion directly to students, offering not just a course—but a meaningful journey into the voice of the talking drum.
